Charlene Berg brings forth a burst of colorful photography, featuring
the works of two new artists with diverging approaches to the same media in her next exhibit at Gallery Ten in
Gills Rock.
Nancy O’Sullivan
pushes the limits of photographic imagery toward the realm of an
impressionist painter in her collection of "Abstracts of Nature." Her
colorful and unusual abstractions are fresh and inspiring. Yet she
achieves her distinctive results in a classical manner, using an array
of photographic media without digital enhancements. O’Sullivan
explains, “I seek to evoke a non-ending kaleidoscope of feelings. From
clarity to a dreamlike state and a return to simplistic reflections, I
create a moment in time for you to ponder and contemplate. These
moments will take you on a meditative directional journey with a
deliberate absence of a destination. By passages end, you are left with
an aura of reflection, tranquility and a profound sense of
transformational energy.” She
does not "Photoshop" her images. They are created by the
artist acting as a kinetic intermediary between
the environment and the photographic process. O'Sullivan
literally captures her images in a precise and controlled dance, one
that must be a delight to witness in person. Click to hear her describe the method... Dustin J. Williston
has been a lifelong artist working in various mediums. After earning a
degree in Commercial Art, taking photographs finally captured his
concentrated attention. For the past fifteen years he has been a
professional photographer, shooting
in a photojournalistic style using traditional film methods. In recent
years he has made the switch, converting to digital capture.
While
working for a group of weekly newspapers in southern Wisconsin,
Williston was the recipient of several awards through the Wisconsin
Newspaper Association (WNA) and the National Newspaper Association
(NNA). “You
don’t have to travel the world to document something amazing,” says
Williston. “Just stop. Just look. That is how to find artwork within.”
His focus is often on the details, taking a precise and close up look at the world from within inches of the lens.
“I
see images for as simple as they can be, yet, at the same time in their
fullest complexity. Sometimes the vision is black and white, while
other times it is as colorful as the rainbow,” he explains. “I take the
simple and create a work of art.” Click to hear him discuss his evolution as an artist and his printing preferences... You can meet both artists in
person at Charlene’s Gallery Ten in Gills Rock on Saturday, June 7 from
3 – 5 PM. The exhibit runs through July 10.
