Recycled imagery from Karla Fuller and Norm Knott from Sept. 22 - Oct. 26
Two
individuals that share a collective fondness for symbolic imagery are
the next featured artists in upcoming exhibitions at Charlene's Gallery
Ten in Gills Rock. The choices they make and the resulting messages
that their works provoke are driven by separate perspectives, but the
net result is a feast for those that appreciate didactic art.
Like Haley's comet, Norman Knott
is cyclically featured at Charlene Berg's Gallery Ten. Every few years
his orbit seems to intersect the Gills Rock meridian with fans and
aficionados flocking north to revel in his latest flaming collection of
eccentricities.
| Knott, considers himself a "recycling artist," with an unrestrained psyche. |

His
works tarball a variety of themes, imagery and issues ranging from
Buddhism to Bobism. Over the past several years he has delivered a
kitschy-glitchy collection of mixed media assemblages, both 2- and
3-dimensional, derived in part from his personal collection of
nostalgic memorabilia Americana.
Knott
always delves deep into metaphor, creating collages and assemblages
that both preserve and honor the past by memorializing, enhancing and
embellishing it. His effective re-birthing of ordinary “stuff,” the
discarded objects, materials and leftovers that he glazes and glitters
over with all varieties of adornment, begin to resemble a collection of
snapshots... of royalty.
“The materials for my work come from everywhere,” says Knott. “From the
shells my neighbor brought back from Florida to the pieces of my
worn-out Buddhist prayer rug, objects inspire the work."
For more than a decade, Milwaukee artist Karla Fuller's
mystical, enchanting and whimsical collage work has been evolving in
what she calls, “a continuous experiment with mixed media... drawn to
Medieval and Early Renaissance figures and design, intrigued by vintage
ephemera, and mystified by the early navigations of the celestial
bodies and their relationship to astrology, omens and time.”

Earning a B.A. in Art and English at North Central College, it's not
surprising that Fuller's intimate creations combine nostalgic
figurative imagery with text and vintage photographs, fiber, text,
paper, paint, ink and beeswax.

“The
ingredients of my collages become the layers of my past, present and
future, and the layers of my imagination,” she explains. “A vintage
photo that reminds me of a character from a dream; an old piece of
ribbon with the touch of forgotten velvet; a canceled stamp from a
foreign land yet traveled; become a mysterious set of keys that unlock
the secrets of a forbidden past.”
Raised
in a family of artists and travelers, Karla continues to reside and
work at an Oconomowoc home studio with her husband and two children.
