Julie McLaughlin and Paulette Schwengel launch Charlene's Gallery Ten 2007 season
Saturday, May 26 from 5 7 PM
I am delighted to include the opening of my first 2007 Featured Artist Exhibit at Gallery Ten as another sure sign of spring arriving in Gills Rock. Two artists with similar backgrounds, but much different end-results are featured together to celebrate their expressive and rebellious talent.
You are invited to meet these two dynamic women in person at an artist's reception hosted in their honor on Saturday, May 26 from 5 7 PM. Enjoy a variety of refreshments, ask probing questions, meet other art lovers and peruse my entire gallery as well as the specific featured works by McLaughlin and Schwengel.
Looking forward to seeing you,
Charlene, Dewey, Cuppa' Joe and Arthur
Paulette Schwengel likes to consider herself an ‘outsider’ after rekindling her fundamental passion for painting following a 25-year hiatus working as a designer in the world of retail. Upon completing her studies of art at the University of Wisconsin, she began to apply her knowledge of design at the Century House in Madison. Her role as visual designer kept her there on the job for 20 years, but eventually she rejected the security of a 9-to-5 daily life.
In the late eighties she worked as a costume designer for the Imray Dancers and then took on private commissions as an interior designer. In the early nineties she began to revive her love of painting and collage. Eventually she was represented by Madison's Rhapsody Gallery where she exhibited and sold her works while gaining a number individual commissions.
| “My subjects are eclectic and varied,” says Schwengel. |

“I spiritually react to stimuli around me and then create my response to a chosen subject in the appropriate medium.” |
Currently living in Jacksonport, she is presenting a collection of her latest paintings in acrylic at Gallery Ten's “Common Thread” exhibit, running through June 8.
Julie McLaughlin worked as a costume designer for many years before taking a more personal creative journey to explore the possibilities of employing handmade papers in a 3-dimensional manner. Fiber, in one form or another, has always been a key ingredient in her artistic endeavors.
“My years as a costume designer have given way to a more personal journey using handmade paper and the corseted silhouette,” she explains. “Along with wonderful textures, ranging from rough opacity to smooth translucency, there is also a preconceived notion that handmade paper is very fragile and vulnerable.”
| “I truly enjoy pairing my papers with welded steel rod - just to prove that paper is hardly vulnerable, but very resilient and strong - a nice metaphor lurking behind the facade of the corseted silhouette.” |

McLaughlin maintains a studio in Dysart, Iowa and shows her work both nationally and internationally. |
This year her work has been exhibited at the Foundry Art Centre, St Charles, MO; the Beard Gallery, Wheaton College, Norton, MA; and the Cornucopia Art Center in Lanesboro, MN. She is the featured artist at the Marion Arts Festival, Marion, Iowa on May 19. Julie is married with 3 grown children and a studio cat, Stella.
