Charlene's Gallery Ten invites you to meet...
"Two artists who explore the metaphysical realm."

Denise Denu and Nancy Lohmiller next featured artists exhibiting at Charlene's Gallery Ten
Opening reception Saturday, July 14 from 5 – 7 PM

We are all very excited about the upcoming show, set to open this Saturday evening. Denise Denu and Nancy Lohmiller each derive artistic inspiration directly from the organic forms and materials they employ, but the net results are quite different.

Denu utilizes the ancient form of the mask as a means of experiencing the inner and outer dimensions of the psyche, fashioning her forms in leather and birch bark. Lohmiller delves into the very core of matter and spirit in her visual studies of light, moving over and revealing form as energy.

Sounds cosmic? Well, it is... and you are invited to see the results and meet these individuals in person from 5 – 7 PM at an opening reception celebrating their works on Saturday, July 14.

Looking forward to seeing you,
Charlene, Dewey, Cuppa' Joe and Arthur

Nancy Lohmiller, a professor of art and Chair of the Graphic Design Department at Mt. Mary College explains, "We are nothing but energy. I follow in the footsteps of artists like Cezanne, studying how light moves in and around an object. But, what we see is only a fraction of what we are.”

A painter for more than thirty years, her latest works take her studies of form beyond her earlier still life compositions into an investigation of the unclothed human body. In so doing, Lohmiller also brings her deep understanding of the human condition derived from years spent as a hospice nurse.

“As I paint, I inhale all that is around me,” Lohmiller explains. “Pivotal threads are discovered. In the human form we see only a small particle of the whole universal."

"My work continues to explore that organic form of life and its fluid movement... light through time.”

Complementing Lohmiller's water-based oils on canvas, the mask works of Denise Denu seek to comprehend the human condition from a different perspective. After graduating with a BFA from the University of Wisconsin in 1983, Denu began her voyage into three-dimensional artwork experimenting with paper mache, plaster and other inexpensive materials. When she discovered leather a whole new world opened up.

“I learned quickly that I could easily manipulate the material, creating faces with character, bringing life and meaning to form."

"After a time I wanted to incorporate nature's own beauty into my work. While continuing to work with leather, which is soft and supple, I took a new direction and began to work with birch bark, a rigid and brittle medium. While this poses many challenges, I enjoy dealing with a material that has a life of it’s own.”

Denu's works blur the boundaries of art and the esoteric, just as masks transform the wearer into another realm.

“The process of creating each mask is magical,” says Denu. “Even though I start out with an idea and have control of the color, I can never predict the final result.”

The results of both artists' most recent creative explorations and their dedication to the pursuit of blending art and philosophy can be seen at Charlene's Gallery Ten in Gills Rock through August 17.
