Dear Friends,
It's hard to believe that we are rapidly advancing on the last
remaining weeks of summer 2007. But, that also signals an upcoming
annual celebration. We hope you will join us for the 7th Annual Gills Rock ArtFest at Gallery Ten on Labor Day Weekend.
Two days of art-in-action live demonstrations provided by a bevy of
artists on-site make this a festive reason to head north to Gills Rock
- more news and details in our next Art-e-News
This weekend we are pleased to invite you to travel north for another
good reason, to see the latest work by one of Door County's most
talented young sculptors. Joining her with a complementary show in the
tower gallery is an artist from the deep south. Meet them both in
person this Saturday evening from 5 - 7 PM. Read on to find out more...
Looking forward to seeing you,
Charlene, Dewey, Cuppa' Joe and Arthur
Spirit Lady, Mother Nature, goddess, medicine woman, she has many names...
Angela Lensch's latest work premieres at Gallery Ten
Judy Bobula collages featured in the tower

Bobula and Lensch on exhibit through Sept. 21
In 2003 Angela Lensch
was featured in a special Guenzel Gallery exhibition as one of
Peninsula Art School's select Emerging Artists. In the four years
hence, she has validated that honor by blossoming into one of Door
County's most innovative and diverse sculptors. Driven by a personal
philosophy that links her creative energy to the natural environment
that surrounds her, Angela Lensch is truly a Door County artist in all
that the tag implies.

Her
background studies - earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in
Sculpture and Furniture from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design
in 2001 - provide a clue that she intended, from the start, to develop
a a full spectrum of three-dimensional work.
|
Many collectors and interior designers now take pride in owning a piece
of her distinctive furniture, unique cedar branch light sculpture,
jewelry or three-dimensional multi-media assemblages.
On Saturday, August 18 Angela Lensch will share her most recent unseen
works derived from a creative avatar she calls the Spirit Lady
in a dedicated exhibit at Charlene's Gallery Ten in Gills Rock. She
calls it “Wildflower's & Wildwood,” a fusion of wood sculpture and
burnt linear drawings.
| In creating a Spirit Lady, “I want to express feelings and emotions without words,” says Angela. |
|
“Even
more so, to capture those special moments of importance that are
somewhat timeless, and encompassing - moments of transformation. I
began by drawing very simple figures with subtle yet profound gestures.
The figures really started taking off when I drew them on wood, as the
grain and style of the wood affected the feeling of the figure. This is
what I was looking for. As I began to sculpt the wood a dance started
between myself and the wood that was very familiar and natural. I
haven't been able to stop making them ever since.“
Lensch is most at ease working with wood in any scale, from earring
sized morsels to massive logs and tree roots. She is equally adept at
pounding, shaping and welding steel.
“I enjoy the transition from working wood to working with forged steel
and cast metal,” she explains. “I can pound on it and bend it and join
it together almost instantly, while with wood it is delicate and slow.
Whether it’s the rhythm of the hammer on the anvil or the methodical
sanding of the wood, each has their own meditation.”
Her latest evolution brings forth, not only a marriage of these
familiar materials but also an extension of the fiery process normally
reserved for steel alone.
“I have burnt parts of sculptures in the past and have found it to be
very sacred, both the process and the concept. Now, with burning
flowers onto the wooden Spirit Ladies, they take on additional levels
of meaning. It seems so natural to add flowers to the Spirit Lady as I
can see the plants wrapping around the figure like clothing.”
Works by Angela Lensch are featured in Charlene's main exhibition gallery with mixed media collages by artist Judy Bobula
on display in the tower gallery. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Judy
moved south while in her twenties, settling in Huntsville, Alabama
where she now lives with her husband. She studied art at Wesleyan
College in Macon, Georgia and Kennesaw College in Marietta, Georgia,
continuing formal studies at Calhoun College and now at the University
of Alabama in Huntsville.
 |
“My
collages are, for the most part, non-objective, bordering on abstract,”
says Bobula. “All of the papers are hand-stained or painted and at
times I add organic and found materials.”
